Exception Handler

Shortly after I began this triptych, I had to abandon it and return to washing dishes in another country. Every six months or so I´d come back to visit for anything between a weekend and ten days. So I´d spend some time with the painting but would have forgotten what I had been doing six months beforehand, and each time was spent basically reacquainting myself with the thing from the beginning. The result of these on-off sessions was that the painting would change in a way that was impossible to bring to completion on a subsequent visit, and that cycle would repeat itself for the next five years.

Exception Handler (2021, triptych oil on canvas, 91cm X 200cm)

When I did return permanently to live there, still another five years elapsed before I brought out these canvases once more with a determination to finally bring it to a close.
